Bolivia – Parinacota Ascent

The Sajama National Park, located on the border with Chile, is one of the most spectacular places to visit in Bolivia, a landscape f volcanoes and hot springs.
Day 1. La Paz - Sajama - Parinacota's Base Camp
Departure from La Paz in the morning from where we shall cross over the Altiplano before arriving to the entrance of the Sajama National Park (approximately 4h). Along the way we shall see the Chipaya tombs (chullpas). We will go into the park through the village of Sajama and, later on, to the sources of hot springs located at the foot of the Sajama volcano. From here, in private jeep, we will reach the base camp at Parinacota. Parinacota is a beautiful volcanisc cone with lava flows seen on its southern flanks. In Quechua, the name of the mountain means ‘lake of the flamingoes’. Set up camp.
Day 2 : Ascent of Parinacota (6340m)
Grade II/AD, Max 50° - with mountain guide
Early morning equipment check before the tentative ascent of Parinacota. Return to the base camp.
Ascent is without the aid of rope and without technical difficulties. Use of crampons or ice-axe according to the snow conditions. By the end of the day, return to the village of Sajama.
Cold lunch. Night in a local house.
Day 3. Sajama - TomarapiI - La Paz
In the morning, a trip to the geysers and to the hot springs before circling the Sajama volcano.
Here the fauna is numerous and varied with alpacas, vicuñas and ñandus (South American ostrich).
We will also see pink flamingos on the Huayna Khota lagoon. Later on, we shall take the road to the historical village of Tomarapi before returning to La Paz |
