Bolivia – Sajama Ascent

Sajama is the highest peak in Bolivia and is the remnants of an eroded volcano with large and unstable cliffs.
Day 1. La Paz - Sajama
Departure from La Paz in the morning, crossing the altiplano before arriving to the entrance of the Sajama National Park (approximately 4h).Along the way we shall see the Chipaya tombs (chullpas). After, we will enter into the park through the village of Sajama and on to the sources of hot springs located at the foot of the Sajama volcano. Accommodation at a local home.
Day 2. Ascent of Sajama (5450m)
Grade II/AD, Max 50° - with mountain guide
Early morning equipment check before the start of our ascent to the base camp at Sajama (5450m). Porters will assist in the climb and will involve 5 hours of trekking along volcanic rocks.
Set up camp.
Day 3. Ascent of Sajama / Day 2 (6540 m.a.s.l.)
Wake at 4am to leave our camp for a tentative ascent of Sajama (approximately 6h). Upon reaching the summit, a descent of 5 hours until the source of hot springs. Accommodation at a local home.
Day 4. Sajama - Tomarapi - La Paz
In the morning, a trip to the geysers and to the hot springs before circling the Sajama volcano.
Here, the fauna is numerous and varied with alpacas, vicuñas and ñandus (South American ostrich). We shall also see pink flamingos on the Huayna Khota lagoon. Later we will take the road to the historical village of Tomarapi before returning to La Paz in the afternoon. |
