Day 1: La Paz
Arrival in La Paz, reception and transfer to the
4* El Rey Hotel.
Day 2: La Paz
After breakfast, a city tour of La Paz. With its own unique
topography containing few flat areas and protected by its
eternal guardian, the snow peak of Ilimani (6402m), La Paz
houses the seat of government of Bolivia. A visit to the Plaza
Murillo (with its presidential palace, national congress and
metropolitan cathedral), its famous witches market and a choice
of fine museums. With many interesting museums to visit, choose
between the National Museum of Art, The Ethnographic and Folklore
Museum and The Museo Tambo Quirquincho (old fashioned dresses
and silverware amongst others). On Calle Jaen, a beautiful
colonial street, there are four museums which may all be visited
one after another. These are: The Precious Metals Museum,
The Casa de Murillo, The Litoral Boliviano or Military Museum
and the Juan de Vargas Museum; there is even a Coca museum.
A visit will also be made to the Valley of the Moon before
returning to your hotel.
Day 3: Tiahuanaco
After breakfast, a full day visit to Tiahuanaco,
site of the oldest civilisation in Bolivia. Tiahuanaco was
the centre of a very powerful empire stretching back to before
500BC. Excavations are still in progress but many stone ruins
including the sungate and central square are in excellent
condition. Return to your hotel.
Day 4: La Paz - Potosi
After breakfast, stunning journey across the Bolivian
Altiplano to Potosi, which during its mining heyday in the
17th Century was the largest city in the Americas. Transfer
to your hotel.
Day 5: Potosi
City tour of Potosi including the world famous silver mines
from where silver was taken to Spain and used all over Europe.
Now a walk through the streets takes you back to the times
of the Spanish Conquistadores. The whole city has been declared
Patrimony of Mankind by the United Nations. Return to your
hotel.
Day 6: Potosi - Sucre
After breakfast, we head northeast towards the judicial capital
of Bolivia, Sucre. Arrival and transfer to your hotel. Free
day.
Day 7: Sucre
City tour of the "White City" where outstanding examples
of baroque art are found on nearly every corner. Sucre was
the capital of Bolivia until the end of the last century and
is officially listed as a Monument of the Americas and also
as Patrimony of Mankind by the United Nations. The tour includes
a visit to the Museum of La Recoleta, dating from 1600. With
several colonial and republican paintings in addition to sculptures,
the museum also houses rare gold artifacts and interesting
archaeological objects. A visit to the "house of freedom",
the most important historical monument in Bolivia due to its
role in the signing of Bolivia's independence in 1825.
Day 8: Sucre - Santa Cruz
After breakfast, head towards the large, jungle frontier
town of Santa Cruz. Founded in 1561 by the Spanish captain
Ñuflo de Chávez.
Day 9: Santa Cruz
Free day to enjoy this warm tropical town. Don't forget to
see the wild sloths in the trees above the Plaza de Armas.
Day 10: Santa Cruz - Cochabamba
Journey continues westwards and rising in altitude
until we reach Cochabamba at 2500m, the heart of the Bolivian
valleys.
Day 11: Cochabamba
A visit to Cristo de la Concordia, located in the
San Pedro hill, is a monumental sculpture approximately 35
meters in height. A visit to Plaza 14 de Setiembre in the
heart of Cochabamba before enjoying the rest of the day at
leisure.
Day 12: Cochabamba - La Paz
After breakfast, return to La Paz, transfer to the
airport and onward for your flight home. |
